Podcast logoIt’s been a couple of weeks since we last recorded (sorry, but sometimes we need to take a week off, catch our breath and regroup to get through to the end of the season – think of it like us having a rest day in the middle of the grand tour that is the season). Anyway, we catch up on ALL the racing since last time we spoke which includes the Ladies Tour of Norway, Vårgårda World Cups – Team Time Trial and Road Race, the last of this year’s MTB World Cups in Méribel, and even the Tour of the King Valley in the Australian National Road Series. We also discuss how far we’ve come in the last couple of years with improved video coverage and how that results in shifting our expectations from races (in a good way), and so much other stuff. It’s an amazing episode and it’s here for you to enjoy right now! (1:32:42 MIN / 89.00 MB)

Rider development

We’re really proud of our friend Amber Pierce, who has launched the Network for Advancing Atheletes, a brand-new mentoring programme for young women/women new to the sports, in cycling, swimming, athletics and triathlon.  It provides a space for the newbies to ask experienced athletes questions, and provides one-on-one mentoring opportunities.  Check out their website, follow them on twitter and facebook and pass it on to anyone you think would be interested – and if you’d like to support their work, you can donate to them here.  The mentoring is North American at the moment, but the Q&As are for everywhere.  We’re very excited about this, and we’ll be interviewing Amber very soon.

More semi-related things we liked this week….

Nice USA tv report on Lea and Sabra Davison’s Little Bellas programme to get girls into mountain biking

Great news – next year the Trofeo da Moreno, the junior race that runs alongside the Trofeo Alfredo Binda World Cup, will be UCI ranked – the only UCI-ranked junior women’s race on the calendar apart from Worlds.  Read more, and a video:

British team Epic Cycles-Scott Contessa talk about their plans for 2015, and how they’re going to work closely with Matrix-Vulpine.  (If you’d like to ride with the Matrix team, they’re doing a fan-ride on 6th September in London – there’s more information here)

If you know any women in Australia who want to get into (or back into) cycling…

Handcyclist and paralympic silver meddallist Karen Darke has a week left on her kickstarter to make a short film, Impossible, on overcoming adversity – find out more, and watch her video, and if you can, please do donate.

Other things we liked

Fun interview with Lucy Garner on Rouleur (we like the opening section!)

Track sprint superstar Anna Meares recently shaved her head to raise money for the Little Heroes Foundation – watch the video about why, and there’s a nice interview with her about that and much more by Aaron S Lee on Southern Spin.

Sara Carrigan won the Olympic Road Race in 2004 for Australia – she talks about what it meant then, and how it feels, ten years later.

Julie Leth‘s guest-blog on Chloe Hosking’s site:  10 reasons why you should ride.

More cycling inspiration – screening details of the film Bicycle, mostly in the UK, but some international.  For more info on the film and to see some clips, check out their site.

What happens when you can’t ride any more?  Pinkbike story of Marilee, who had to stop cycling due to illness, and how she deals with that.

Aussie rider Tessa Fabry‘s photo-blog of her first weekend of European racing with the National Team.

Two more Specialized-lululemon videos - Lisa Brennauer and Carmen Small demonstrating drafting, and Carmen talking about riding La Course by Le Tour de France

Upcoming races

  • The GP de Plouay, the final round of the Road World Cup, 30th August – some (maybe all?) will be streamed live on the UCI’s youtube.  I’ll put up a “how to watch” tomorrow, but the race starts at 13:40 CEST (12:40pm UK BST; 9:40pm Aus AEST; 8:40am USA EST; 5:40am PST)
  • Para-Cycling Road World Championships, 28th August – 1st September – and we’ll have live streaming of Sunday and Monday’s races, on USParalympics.org.  Amazing!  Follow the great race twitter, and I’ll put up more info on following tomorrow. Some videos from British Cycling, with Lora Turnham & Corrine Hall talking about aiming for two tandem golds, and Karen Darke talking about the handcycling
